John Pletka

Principal Consultant, Abraxis Networks · Alpharetta, GA

Senior technology leader with 30 years architecting and delivering scalable software systems across cloud, data, and AI-driven platforms. Combines deep technical expertise with executive leadership — defining system architecture while staying actively involved in design and implementation.

Career arc

Thirty years across trading, video, AI, and the platforms underneath them.

Started in 1995 as a junior engineer at Sungard Data Systems, working on commercial energy management and trading platforms. Progressed to lead architect over the next decade, designing systems that processed $1B+ in annual transactions.

Founded Abraxis Networks in 2002 as a vehicle for consulting and side engagements. The practice has run continuously since then — sometimes solo, sometimes with managed subcontractor teams — alongside or between full-time roles.

Held VP, Director, and CTO-level roles at FreePoint Commodities (and its successive owners Societe Generale and Royal Bank of Scotland), Nagra Kudelski, Soul Machines, and most recently Official AI — building platforms in commodity trading, video streaming, real-time conversational avatars, and AI-driven marketing.

Today, Abraxis Networks is the primary practice — focused on AI-enhanced business automation, fractional CTO engagements, and cloud architecture across AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure.

  • Built and led an offshore engineering team; established delivery practices for distributed development
  • Drove enterprise-grade requirements: security, auditability, SOC 2 readiness
  • Led technical due diligence through a successful acquisition exit to ZeroNorth

Charter Communications

2023–2025

Data Engineering Consultant

  • Designed large-scale data pipelines processing ~100 GB/day via Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker
  • Built Python ETL and analytics workflows on distributed worker queues with Pandas / Polars / DuckDB / TimescaleDB
  • Optimized a 1B+ row Postgres database; developed transformations and models for operational insights

Kohl's

Data Platform Project Lead

Leadership roles

Operating experience the consulting practice is built on.

Abraxis Networks has run continuously since 2002 — often alongside or between full-time leadership roles. The roles below are the operating context behind the work.

  1. Chief Technology Officer

    2024 – Present

    Official AI · Seattle, WA

VC-backed startup building a marketplace for digital rights, AI image and video generation, and AI-driven marketing automation. Defined architecture strategy across multi-cloud infrastructure and AI workflows. Hired and led a team of 5 (engineers, QA, design). Designed and built multi-agent workflow automations that perform deep-research analysis, train AI image models, and execute social media marketing campaigns.

  2. Senior Director of Engineering

    2021 – 2023

Soul Machines · San Francisco, CA

Led three engineering teams (18+ engineers) shipping the real-time conversational engine behind Soul Machines’ digital avatar platform. Served as Principal Architect for AI/ML systems — RAG-based pipelines using Milvus, LangChain, RASA, TensorFlow, and OpenAI on AWS microservices supporting 100,000+ concurrent conversations.

  3. Director of Engineering

    2018 – 2021

Nagra Kudelski (Nagra Sports, myCinema) · Phoenix, AZ

Built two product lines from initial vision: Nagra Sports (live video, sports data, real-time results to mobile and web) and myCinema (a video subscription / streaming service for movie theaters). Hired and trained a team of 6, took an MVP from rough product vision to live audiences and revenue in four months.

  4. Senior Architect Consultant

    2014 – 2017

FIS Global (formerly Sungard Data Systems) · Houston, TX

Coordinated 20+ remote engineers across four teams. Lead architect on Sungard’s next-generation trading and risk management platform. Designed and shipped a commercial algorithmic trading platform on the European commodity exchange, an ongoing revenue line for FIS. Led migration of a legacy monolith to microservices.

  5. Vice President, Software Development

    2006 – 2012

FreePoint Commodities / Societe Generale / Royal Bank of Scotland · Stamford, CT

Owned a core part of the firm’s commodity trading platform — a highly distributed quantitative financial modeling and market analysis system. Implemented mark-to-market algorithms and quant simulations across 100+ compute nodes with in-memory databases.

  6. Senior Software Architect

    1995 – 2006

Sungard Data Systems (Caminus, Altra Energy Technologies) · Houston, TX

Progressed from junior engineer to lead architect, ultimately heading architecture and development for core energy trading platforms. Led design and delivery of Sungard’s flagship Energy Management System; lead engineer for a commodity trading platform processing $1B+ annually.
