M/13 C/3 Page 130 STANFIELD CEMETERY Sandy Flats near Lot & Boston, Ky. Sept. 1976 Copied by C. Maynard Cornelius and his sister Shirley Lester Bird, Thomas Crittenden 12 May 1848 1 Oct 1850 s/o Robert/Nancy; age 2-4-19 Campbell,Elizabeth 29 Mar 1830 11 Nov 1859 w/o Jackson; age 29-7-12 " William 18 Dec 1850 21 Jul 1851 s/o Jackson/Elizabeth " Joseph 15 May 1860 24 Aug 1861 s/o Jackson/Elizabeth Stanfield, Sampson(only death date) 11 Jul 1837 no other writings.
Headstone with left top corner broken off
as per drawing at right - believed to be CURNUT. The 1st in Nov. 1857 seemed to be an afterthought, being added in after the original markings. |
|
Headstone started but not completed with
the wording and shape of stone at right. The etchings are clear and not eroded with age as so many stones are. The D is made backward. |
This cemetery is located on the old Sampson Stanfield farm. A family named Huddleston lived there in 1976. The cemetery site is now being used as a barnyard. Only one stone remains upright and in place, that of Elizabeth Campbell. The stones remaining, including that of Sampson, are piled up under a tree with other rocks that look like a base for a fireplace in an old homeplace. We took three pictures, one of the headstone of Sampson Stanfield and two of the general area. We searched the area up to 1/4 mile radius for other stones, none found.

We welcome additions and corrections to these Cemetery Books. It is our intention that these books remain intact as Mr. Cornelius published them but he knew there would be some mistakes made and stated that the information contained should be a starting point for gathering information not taken as 100% proof.
Additions and Corrections may be added by completing the form linked below. A link will be provided from the name on the cemetery page to your information, provided you provide your name as submitter and e-mail or snail mail address so that others may get in touch with you. We strongly suggest that you include your snail mail address on all queries, obits, etc, posted to the Whitley County Pages. People using public library computers do not always have e-mail available and your e-mail address is more likely to change than your snailmail..
